Darren Beckett

Brandon Flowers/Madeleine Peyroux/Emilie Simon

Born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, Darren started playing the drums at the age of 4 when his father gave him his first pair of drumsticks. After winning the prestigious Bass Ireland Arts Award as a teenager, he left the Emerald Isle to study Jazz at The New School in NYC, where he still resides.

A master beats composer, Darren's unique sound has made its mark on many tracks, the latest being Brandon Flower's enticing new single "Can't Deny My Love" which Darren co-wrote. When Brandon asked Darren for some beats, Darren delved into his ever-growing catalogue of fresh sounds and sent Brandon about twenty. On hearing one peculiar, heart-racing, tribal rhythm, Brandon wrote the infectious melody and lyrics to what has become the lead track from his new album "The Desired Effect". For this particular new sound, Darren cites Kate Bush and Phil Collins as inspirations.

Darren's passion and talent for creating original, ground-breaking beats will be further showcased in a number of exciting collaborations in 2017.

Darren’s main gigs are Brandon Flowers (solo), Madeleine Peyroux, and French pop artist Emilie Simon which shows his diversity and adaptability. Never able to put down his drumsticks for long, he's also part of Little Big; award-winning Jazz pianist Aaron Park's band. Their forthcoming album will be out this year. Darren regularly tours India with Goldspot, recently hitting the massive NH7 Festival circuit. Other recent gigs have been with James Hunter and Lauren Hill. Darren was part of the early 2000s NYC music scene that spawned The Strokes, and became the founding member of indie darlings Ambulance Ltd on TVT (2003-2007). He has toured the world, playing everywhere from Carnegie Hall to the Royal Albert Hall.

Darren has worked with notable producers Daniel Lanois, Stuart Price, Mark Plati and Jim Abbiss. He has composed music used in advertising (Sprint, NASCAR), television (Grey’s Anatomy, The OC, CSI) and film (Forgetting Sarah Marshall, PS I Love You).

Darren is also the head of the Drum Department at The Academy of Contemporary Music, London.
